And the Loser Winner is...

I receive all matters of ill-conceived spam e-mails hawking everything from barely legal Asian 'tang to Christian debt consolidation. In addition, I also get a number of fake e-mails supposedly from America Online (my ISP), eBay, PayPal, and the list goes on and on and on. These faux e-mails usually are telling me that my credit card information needs to be updated, has been lost, has expired, etc. etc. You name it, I get it.

Recently I received what has to be the hands-down winner of Worst Hoax E-mail of 2005. Check it out and see if you can spot the things that might tip you off that it's a fake. Click on the second image to check my choices against yours. Enjoy!

The margins and backgrounds look fine to me in this sample, tho the whole thing looks blurry, but there are plenty of punctuation errors. My big clue with this and ebay spoofs is that I don't have accounts with either. Nor Washington Mutual, the next big spoof spam I get.

You get the spam/virus attachment from the "fbi" saying you've been on illegal sites? I've gotten that twice at work, and I don't use my work email for anything other than work.

Me too. Well, I'm glad it's not just me. If they only knew they were wasting their time. Oh well, I'm sure if just one person falls for it, it's worth it to them. That's all it takes.

Shelly-
No, I haven't received the FBI e-mail yet, but I did just hear about it on the news. Apparently it's the hack e-mail du jour. My standpoint is "come get me." I'd let them come find me before I'd click on any links or go to any sites and give information. Again, I don't know why people are so stupid. I think in this particular scam e-mail's case, it plays on people's guilt and fears. It no workee on me. I have no scruples.

LOL! That's great! (re:dkhed) I thought I was the only one who looked for meanings/words in those word verification jumbles! :)

Stephaine-
LOL! No shit! I've thought the same thing...wait...I do have a penis. Anyway, you know what I mean. I've recently been getting those "enlarge your penis" spam e-mails and more foreign lottery winner notifications. Wheeee! I'll be virile AND rich! :B
